The AChemS Program Committee invites proposals for Symposia at the 2024 Annual Meeting. Symposia are the major forum for oral presentations on the latest developments in areas of significance to the broader chemical senses community and they are an opportunity to introduce new or provocative ideas, technical innovations and growth areas for interdisciplinary or translational science. We encourage symposia proposals from members at all career stages, as well as creative ways to include participation from members early in their chemosensory research careers. Please consider including trainees as co-chairs, introductory speakers or other roles in addition to serving as a traditional speaker.
Symposia Criteria:
We ask that proposals focus on exciting, newly-emerging areas of research with high-quality and high-impact scientific content. Topics should be of broad interest to the chemosensory community.
Symposia Composition:
All symposia will be 120 minutes in length. Symposia should include a designated Chair (or co-Chairs), who must be an AChemS member in good standing. The proposer may serve as Chair but is not required to. Symposium proposals should include up to five (5) invited speakers which may include the Chair(s). A short (15 min slot) should be devoted to an early stage investigator, which may include a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow or junior faculty member. This slot may also be reserved for selection of a speaker from the submitted abstracts, upon advisement with the program chairs.
We encourage, but do not require, the inclusion of up to two speakers who would be first-time attendees to AChemS and/or who may work outside of the chemical senses. The participation of all invited speakers must be confirmed prior to the submission of the proposal. Proposers are encouraged to include elements of format and content that promote the thematic coherence of the symposium, such as content-rich introductions, coordinated introductory and discussion slides within the talks, or well-organized panel discussions.

Evaluation: Successful symposia will focus on key issues and new developments in chemosensory science, and include a diverse panel of speakers (including scientists from historically underepresented groups, and who represent a range of career stages). Symposia will be chosen to represent a balance of topics and range of model organisms and human studies. Symposia should not serve as an opportunity to primarily showcase the work of the symposia organizers and their lab members.
Funding: To promote participation across disciplines and to attract new investigators to the Annual Meeting, funds will be available to cover registration fees and provide up to $1500 for travel expenses for first-time, non-member attendee speakers. Maximum of $3,000 per symposia.
Submission: The submission form requires the following information:
Acceptance:
Symposia chairs will be notified of the Program Committee's decision in October.
